In 1989, Álvaro Palacios decided to leave his native Rioja to make wine in Gratallops, Priorat. This Camins del Priorat is made from grapes, mostly young vines, sourced from 101 plots in 10 different villages, situated on steep terraces of Llicorella schist.

The name refers to the paths, or camins, that connect these plots. It is a blend of Garnacha, Cariñena, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot. The blend can vary annually.

The climate in Priorat is quite remarkable. Summers are long, hot, and dry, with an annual rainfall of usually no more than 400mm (compared to around 900mm in the Netherlands). The location and exposure of the vineyards vary, explaining the long six-week harvest period.

After harvest, the grapes are sorted and gently crushed. Alcoholic fermentation then takes place in cement vats, stainless steel, and wood. The wine then matures for another six months in used French oak barriques.

The result is a fruit-driven wine with a pleasant spiciness. Colour: Ruby red. Aroma: Violets, cherries, blueberry, blackcurrant, earthy notes and graphite, licorice.

Taste: Expressive wine, youthful with juicy fruit, subtle wood influence, full-bodied with supple tannins. Serving temperature: 16-18°C (60-64°F). Serving suggestion: Delicious with beef tenderloin with Provençal herbs.
